What would a blind man have to smile about? The answer is in his remaining eye. Dead not from injury but from sympathy, it sees the in you that which struck him blind. He is no worse off than you, for you are as blind as he. But he has the mind to see that you cannot.
Some hours in Photoshop. For me, by me, in total homage to ColonyOne.
Nice painting. The eye looks so glassy and discolored, dead. It's eerie. Really nice work.

There's a combustion of material types from dry skin, soft feathers to rugged fur and aged leather which is wonderfully pulled together to create this character Sympathy. He looks sympathetic, it seems only for his own personal amusement, with his left eye boiling some kind of an illusive connection between him and the viewer.
Although personal preference perhaps, I think that you could even better create unification to the character and the textured bg by painting into it more versus just splashing a gradiel tone to it. Beautiful work, for some reason I thought it was going to encompass more but it works great as a portrait crop ^__^
An outstanding, roughly realistic shading style! I like the combination of colours and grey-ish tones, and the details are lovely to look at - one can judge the thickness of his clothing (that appears mostlu leathery) for example.
Also, his hazy eye makes him look a bit mysterious.
